Quick Guide to Health Insurance

To find out about what they will pay for:
  1. Call the number on the back of your card and ask: "Does my plan cover_______ (Ex. Mental health counseling, psychiatry, nutritionist, primary care doctors)?
  2. Ask your insurance: "What is my co-pay?"
    • CO-PAY = what you owe when you visit any doctor, therapist. These are also called "Providers"
  3. Ask your insurance: "what is my deductible?"
    • DEDUCTIBLE = how much money you pay yourself before insurance will kick in (not everyone has a deductible, but you should ask.)

Once you have these questions answered, you should go to your insurance website to search "providers." You may have to create an account to search, have your insurance card handy!

  4. On your insurance website, you can search by "provider type."
    • If you are looking for a therapist (someone to talk to) or psychiatrist (someone to prescribe you medication for mental health) search for "Behavioral Health" in the school’s zip code: 10004 or your own.
    • Once you find some providers who accept your insurance, you will call them directly with a few questions:
      • "Do you accept my insurance plan? I found you on my insurance website, please double check for me."
      • "Are you accepting new patients?"
    • If they say yes, you will set up a time to meet them.

Remember:
- Insurance phone calls and doctors appointments are often long
- If you talk to someone and they don’t know the answer, ask them if they know someone who does!
- Bring your insurance card every time you go to the doctor
- If you’re nervous or unsure, ask someone for help, or bring a friend
- Leave plenty of time for your appointment, sometimes doctors run late
- Bring a list of questions with you and write down their answers
